The races of Kaphar are all original species, each with distinct characteristics.
Essence
Essence is the world's magic system. Not all races have the ability to manipulate essence, and each race that does can only manipulate essence in a certain fashion. Essence manipulation is not equal across the board, even within a certain race. Just like a person's talents and abilities, essence is a mix of talents and abilities. Some have a natural proclivity and talent for essence manipulation while others are not so fortunate. Others are able to work hard and train their abilities to enhance their essence manipulation powers.
It is also about knowledge. The greater the knowledge a person has over their ability, the greater their potential. For instance, an aygiff is able to transform into animals. The more knowledgeable the aygiff is about a certain animal, the stronger their transformation into that animal is. A vaelintrien's knowledge of the world directly impacts his or her ability to manipulate the elements around him or her.
Michis
Michis, or mixed blood, are those children whose parents are of two different races. This is highly looked down upon by most of the societies of Kaphar. It would be similar to the disgust we people of earth have for incest. Perhaps not as strongly, but there are parallels. Not because it's inter-family breeding, but because it decays the bloodline and increases the chances of dementia. In the world of Kaphar, mixing bloods greatly decreases essence manipulation and once a person's blood is mixed, there is no going back. Their children, and their children's children, and so on will forever be marked as Michis and will be resigned to a sub-standard life do to their poor or non-existent essence manipulation. Even those races who do not have the ability to manipulate essence, they have physical characteristics that give them an advantage over other races; however, mixing blood likewise robs their children of these characteristics. Thus, Michis are denigrated and denounced by much of the world of Kaphar.
Dalit
A dalit has the same meaning in the world of Kaphar as it does in the world of earth. A Dalit is a person who is deemed untouchable and an undesirable. They are lower than a slave and shunned by society.
